Sojourners Present "Building of the Flag" At Historic Anniversary of Four Chaplains

Seventy years ago George Lansing Fox, a pastor of the East Concord, Vermont Methodist church and a Mason, along with of his fellow Chaplains went down on the USS Dorchester which was torpedoed by a German submarine.

The Dorchester was carrying 900 soldiers and crew. As the ship went down the four chaplains helped others to life boats and gave their life jackets to others. They were last seen kneeling and praying with those that were left to go down with the ship.

In May the members of The Church in East Concord held a special service to remember this heroic event. It was attended by members of the Fox family and a representative of the Four Chaplains Foundation of Pennsylvania along with many residents of the area. During the event four members of Green Mountain Chapter # 527, Heroes of Seventy- six presented the National Sojourners "Building of the Flag" presentation

Shown in front of the Historic Site Marker in front of the church are (left to right) Cal Keyler, Randy Cary, Tom McPhee and Evered Hinkley.

Sharon Lodge # 105 Donates Painting of George Washington

Recently Sharon Elementary School held an assembly to receive and dedicate a painting of George Washington donated by the members of Sharon Masonic Lodge. The painting, which is a copy of a famous painting of Washington by Rembrandt Peale in 1850, depicts Washington as a military officer when he was approximately 47 years of age.

Freemasons across the country have partnered with the Daughters of Mount Vernon, and the George Washington National Masonic Memorial in Alexandria, Virginia to maintain the image of our first president by placing the painting in schools across the country. In the last few years more than 7000 of these paintings have been donated.

At the assembly, which included all the children of the school, students were asked to answer a series of questions about Washington as a test of their historical knowledge of our first president and his accomplishments. The result was a resounding A+ for the Sharon students as they knew the correct answers to almost all of the questions.

For the dedication two of the members of Sharon Lodge lodge wore their National Sojourners authentic colonial military uniforms popular in the 1770s. Shown in the photo are, (left to right): Leon Sheldon, Past Master, Barrett Williams, Principal of Sharon Elementary, Cal Keyler, Past Grand Master, Bruce Pomeroy, Past Grand Master, Joe Willis, Past Master and Ron Gaetgens, Senior Deacon. This is the second George Washington painting which Sharon Lodge has donated.

Recently Triple 8 Travelers Lodge # 32 of Portsmouth, NH, a member of The Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Massachusetts, honored the Grand Lodge of Vermont at their 39th Annual Anniversary gathering. Past Grand Master, Calvin K. Keyler was on hand as guest speaker representing Vermont.

On behalf of the Vermont contingent Brother Keyler and Brother George Deblon, Grand Junior Warden of Vermont are shown accepting two very special original copies of The Massachusetts Prince Hall Information Guide Books By Raymond T. Coleman that were donated to Vermont's Library by Brother Glenn D. Payne, District Deputy Grand Master of Massachusetts Prince Hall. Other Past Grand Lodge members from Vermont included, Brother Tom MacPhee who presented the "Toast To The Flag" and Brother F. Randall Cary.

Vermont Grand Lodge Officers and other brothers combined with our counterparts from Triple 8 Travelers Lodge # 32 of Massachusetts Prince Hall as an example of Unity between the two Jurisdictions which was the message of Brother Keyler's speech.
